The first step of Rainforest2Reef’s work within the Selva Maya is
to halt the further logging and degradation of the rainforest. However,
this is only the first step – Rainforest2Reef is also committed
to making pro-active conservation an economically viable and self-sustaining
enterprise for communities by promoting environmentally-friendly, income-generating
businesses within the corridor.
One example of our projects to promote environmentally
friendly businesses is our tree-planting enterprise in Pustunich.
Treeplanting in Pustunich.
The people of the Pustunich ejido (a local community of 150 families)
have struggled with crushing poverty for decades, but a tree-planting
project with Rainforest2Reef is offering new hope to both the community
and their rainforest home. With a grant from the Michael Lee Environmental
Foundation Rainforest2Reef is kick-starting a project to plant hundreds
of thousands of trees which can be harvested and sold in future years.
Rainforest2Reef is sponsoring the project and providing the seedlings,
training, and in-country support needed to make it successful.
